Phonological awareness skills are the ability to hear, say and manipulate parts of words and sounds in English.
It is a set of skills that is learned BEFORE moving on to Phonics (phonics is when individuals learn to match sounds/phonemes to the letter or letters/graphemes).
Phonological skills can be supported before children begin skills through play, games, story books etc.
If your child is struggling with reading or spelling, it is worth going back to the set of phonological skills to see if they are working with any of these skills, the phonological awareness tool kit will support you with identifying potential barriers.
